Osthole
Botanical information:
Osthole also named Osthola, Osthol, Osthol, Osthenol, Ost, Cnidiadin, Osthol, and osthol - is a type of coumarin. Osthole is found in cnidium monnieri and several other plants. Osthol could increase androgen, gonadotropin and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity. One mouse study indicates osthol had androgen -like effect and gonadotropin -like effect.
Osthole is found in cnidium monnieri and several other plants.
Cremocarp, ellipsoidal, 2-4 mm long, about 2 mm in diameter. Externally greyish-yellow or greyish-brown; with 2 outcurved stylopods at the summit, and sometimes with a fine fruit stalk at the base. Dorsal surface of mericarps with five thin and longitudinal ridges, commissural surface flattened, with two brown and slightly raised longitudinal ribs. Pericarp lax and fragile, easily rubbed off, seed small, greyish-brown and oily. Odour, aromatic; taste, pungent, cool and numb.
Cnidium seeds are derived from the cnidium plant, which grows throughout China. A typical cnidium is round, dark yellow in colour and has a pleasant aroma. According to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine Cnidium seeds are characterized as acrid bitter and warm.
Standard extract effect and aplication:
Cnidium Monnieri is an herb native to China. Its seeds have medicinal properties and contain 1.3% essential oils and other substances. Cnidium may improve conditions including impotence, female infertility, vaginal itching, and yeast infections. It often causes a deterioration of symptoms in men with chronic spermatorrhea and premature ejaculation.
1. Osthol warms the kidney and improves sexual function
Some Scientists investigated the cavernosal relaxant effect of osthole, a coumarin isolated from Cnidium monnier (L.) Cusson which has been used in China for a long time as a herbal medicine to improve male sexual dysfunction. The data suggested that osthole posseses a relaxant effect on rabbit corpus cavernosal tissues which is attributable to the release of NO from sinusoidal endothelium and to the potentiation of the cGMP and/or cAMP signal mediating relaxation of cavernosal smooth muscle by inhibiting phosphodiesterase¡±. (Corpus cavernosum = one of the columns of erectile tissue forming the dorsum of the penis (one of the two columns of erectile tissue forming the clitoris).
2.Osthol destroying parasite and relieving itching: Osthol can be used to treat trichomonas vaginitis, eczema of scrotum, rubella, scabies, tinea, cutaneous pruritus, etc.
3.Vasorelaxation: Osthole caused an inhibition of voltage-dependent L-type Ca(2+) current in a concentration dependent manner. The channel-blocking properties of osthole may, at least in part, contribute to the underlying mechanisms by which it affects neuronal or neuroendocrine function.
4.Anti-inflammatory effects:
Osthole and xanthotoxin showed anti-inflammatory activity:
5.Anti-allergic effects:Osthol has anti-allergic effect, inhibits contact dermatitis induced by 2,4-dinitro-fluorobenzene or picryl chloride.
Cnidium has some astringent quality, which means that it will help prevent premature ejaculation in men. Furthermore, Cnidium seed has disinfectant qualities and may be used externally as a wash on sores, particularly in the genital region.
